Foundation celebrates £10000 cash boost

The Inspire and Achieve Foundation is celebrating a £10,000 donation from the Mansfield Building Society’s Charitable Trust to allow it to run a Prince’s Trust Team programme for unemployed 16 to 25-year-olds in Nottinghamshire.

The charitable trust was established by the society in 2015 and is exclusive to registered charities in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire or South Yorkshire. In 2016, the society gifted £75,000 to the trust with the intention that further contributions will be added in future years. Independent of the society and its policies, the trust’s decisions are determined by a board of trustees including two society employees and three independent members. The trustees consider sustainable charitable causes that will benefit the community, and were unanimous in their decision to assist Inspire and Achieve.

Inspire and Achieve helps troubled, neglected and disadvantaged young people aged between 16 and 25 to find the support they need to overcome or manage problems and take positive steps towards finding work. The charity helps around 250 people a year, with on average 65% moving into employment, education or training as a result.

The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a 12-week course allowing young people to get involved in team building activities, a week-long residential trip, a community project and two weeks of work experience. They will also get advice on how to write a CV, learn employability skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Pippa Carter, director at the Inspire and Achieve Foundation, said: “Too many disadvantaged young people feel that they don’t have any ability or talent and as a result avoid education or employment. It can be difficult to convince people that they do have what it takes to lead a fulfilling and successful life and that is where the Team programme comes in.

“It will offer participants the opportunity to use skills they perhaps didn’t know they possessed, and give them the confidence and support to help them take their first steps towards building a career by entering work, education or training”.

The first Team programme run by Inspire and Achieve will commence in April this year, with the initial intake expected to result in 13 successful participants completing the course.

In order to ensure success, the foundation will also be running an initial induction week prior to the start of the course for up to 18 applicants, to ensure that those most serious about completing the programme are selected. Those that do not fit the initial requirements will receive continued help and support through the charity, with the aim of being successfully inducted onto the programme in future.

Whilst the trust’s donation of £10,000 will help kick-start the programme, the society will also help where we can through voluntary staff engagement.

“If the programme is a success we’re hopeful it will become self-sustaining and continue running for years to come, helping as many young people as possible start on their path to a better future.”

Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. Founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1976, the charity has supported 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion for over 40 years.

Many of the young people helped by The Prince’s Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or they have been in trouble with the law. The trust’s programmes give vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work. Three-in-four young people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training.
